Carbis Bay Holidays :: Hawkes Point to Lelant Walk

Hawkes Point at the eastern end of Carbis Bay. Porthkidney Sands stretches as far as the Hayle Estuary and is backed by sand dunes and unspoilt by buildings, it can be accessed at beach level around Hawkes Point at low tide or around the coastal path that follows Hawkes Point, as you approach the beach, the old miners' steps are revealed enabling you to follow the beach. Taking the higher route, the views across the beach to Godrevy create evocative images which have been the inspiration of many artists including John Miller.
The coastal path from Headland Road, Carbis Bay starts at Sea Urchin Apartments through leafy glades with a higher perspective of the dramatic sea views.
Through the sand dunes and past the oldest links course in the UK, West Cornwall Golf Course at Lelant, you approach Lelant village, follow the signs to St Uny church. The church was restored in the 13th and 15th centuries although the Irish Saint Uny would have been here in the 6th century. From here walkers start the ancient pilgrimage route to Mount's Bay, known as the St Michael's Way.
There are more stunning views across the Hayle estuary to Mexico Towans, Hayle Towans, Gwithian and Godrevy Lighthouse and back to St Ives, particularly at low tide.
Perhaps lunch at the The Badger and if you get delayed maybe catch the train back to Carbis Bay or St Ives, for the more energetic who would like to venture further you will need to walk around the Lelant Saltings to Hayle before progressing to Hayle Towans and beyond.
