Ancient Monuments and Standing Stones
West Cornwall is steeped in ancient history, with the highest concentration of ancient sites found in Western Europe. Our top three are Lanyon Quoit, Men-an-Tol and Merry Maidens, but there are literally thousands of sites densely packed into a setting that has changed little since the Bronze Age.
Chysauster Ancient Village
An Iron Age settlement originally occupied almost 2,000 years ago. This ancient village consisted of stone-walled homesteads known as 'courtyard houses', found only on the Land's End peninsula and the Isles of Scilly. The houses line a 'village street', and each had an open central courtyard surrounded by a number of thatched rooms. There are also the remains of an enigmatic 'fogou' underground passage. Chysautser is located in Newmill, Penzance, TR20 8XA. An entry fee is charged.
Levant Mine & Beam Engine
Levant mine and beam engine is the only Cornish beam engine anywhere in the world that is still in steam on its original mine site. The famous Levant engine is housed in a small engine house precariously situated on the edge of the cliffs at Pendeen. Restored after 60 idle years by a group of volunteers, its a great opportunity to see this old engine in action, with its evocative sounds and smells.
