For the young and not so young, Surfing is one of the most exhilarating activities and, in West Cornwall you are spoilt for choice. Most west facing beaches enjoy consistent good surf however, dependant on the prevailing wind and westher you can enjoy surfing on all beaches.
The most convenient for our St Ives guests is Porthmeor Beach, whether your interest is boogie or malibu, you should catch some good sets. Visit St Ives Surf School website for more information about surf lessons and hire
For Carbis Bay guests, just catch the train and walk through the town, be there in 10 minutes. Carbis Bay beach is safe and fun for kids, sometimes the breakers are a little stronger and so is good for beginners with either board.
A short walk along Headland Road takes your to Porthkidney Sands and the vast expanse of sand, never crowded but not with lifeguard cover. Alternatively, a drive to nearby Gwithian, Portreath, Porthtowan, Perranporth, Sennen Cove or, of course the world famous Fistral beach at Newquay.

Portreath is for the serious surfer and is best from mid to high tide. At high tide there is the famous Wall break that is a nice right hander that breaks over a reef. There is a cafe and toilets at the top of the beach, also a large carpark.
Porthtowan
Porthtowan another good surfing beach just a short drive away from St Ives and Carbis Bay. There is a large car park and toilets close to the beach, a few shops, cafes and bars. The surf can be very good, lifeguard services are provided from May to September
Perranporth
The 3 miles of golden sands of Perran Bay extend from Perranporth to St Agnes Head, a very popular and busy resort, Perranporth Beach is most certainly one of those special Cornwall beaches recommended to beginner or intermediate surfers. Fistral Beach Newquay
The best surfing beach in Newquay is the internationally renowned Fistral Beach, At South Fistral beach, the waves are excellent but for the experienced surfers - not beginners. Other parts of this large beach provide beginners with opportunity for safer surfing. All of the beach is heavily covered by lifeguard patrols. There are many surf schools offering hire and lessons. Newquay is about 45 minutes away from St Ives, but extremely busy in the Summer.
