Carbis Bay Holidays :: RSPB Hayle Estuary Nature Reserve
In cold winters, as many as 18,000 birds have been seen here at the Hayle Estuary Nature Reserve, because this most south westerly estuary in the UK with the influence of the Gulf Stream, it never freezes. During spring and autumn, it is an ideal place to see migrant wading birds, gulls and terns, curlews, little egrets, oystercatchers, teal and widgeon.
Each season brings a different experience at the nature reserves. In spring, the air is filled with birdsong as they compete to establish territories and attract a mate. In summer, look out for young birds making their first venture into the outside world. Autumn brings large movements of migrating birds - some heading south to a warmer climate, others seeking refuge in the UK from the cold Arctic winter. In winter, look out for large flocks of birds gathering to feed, or flying at dusk to form large roosts to keep warm.
It is always worth looking at Porth Kidney Sands nearby for migrant terns roosting on the beach.
A very popluar reserve for beginner bird watchers and serious twitchers.
