Watersedge Cottage
Description
Wake to the sound of waves and uninterrupted views across St Ives Bay at Watersedge Cottage, Wheal Dream, a characterful Cornish fisherman’s cottage less than a stone’s throw from beautiful Bamaluz Beach. Tucked into the historic lanes of Downalong, this peaceful seaside retreat feels wonderfully connected to the water, yet the harbour, cafés, galleries and independent shops of St Ives are only a short stroll away.
Spend slow mornings watching the fishing boats, admire breathtaking sunrises from the comfort of your bed, or step onto the sand for an early swim. Follow the coastal path to Porthgwidden and Porthmeor beaches, then return to inviting interiors and private outdoor spaces where you can breathe in the sea air and watch the light change across the bay. With far-reaching views towards Godrevy Lighthouse—and the chance to spot local seals basking in the morning sun—Watersedge Cottage captures the magic of the Cornish coast.
About Watersedge Cottage
Recently renovated, Watersedge Cottage pairs the traditional character of a three-storey fisherman’s cottage with fresh, comfortable interiors designed for relaxed stays by the sea. Its position in the heart of old St Ives places beautiful beaches and coastal scenery on the doorstep, while the town’s restaurants, galleries, shops and lively harbour remain only moments away. It is an ideal choice for families or friends seeking a St Ives holiday with the beach on the doorstep and all the town’s amenities close at hand.
On arrival, enter through the enclosed private gated cobbled front courtyard—a private spot with seating where you can relax in the fresh sea air. An outdoor shower is ideal for rinsing sandy feet and wetsuits, while useful storage keeps surfboards safely tucked away. From here, the stable front door opens into the welcoming ground-floor kitchen and dining area, fully equipped with an electric oven, gas hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine and Ninja air fryer. A gas-style woodburner provides a cosy focal point for leisurely breakfasts, sociable suppers and relaxed evenings.
Upstairs, the light-filled first-floor sitting room is made for unwinding, with comfortable seating, a Smart TV and balcony door framing mesmerising views across St Ives Bay towards Godrevy Lighthouse. Step onto the private balcony to enjoy the sea air, watch the sunrise or simply gaze out across the water. A twin bedroom and separate WC cloakroom are also found on this level, together with access to the rear shared courtyard.
The top floor is home to the double bedroom, where front-facing sea views and the soothing sound of waves create a restful retreat. The spacious bathroom has a freestanding bath, a rainfall shower in a blue-tiled walk-in enclosure, a heated towel rail, basin and WC—perfect for a long soak after a day on the coast.
Days here can begin with a beach walk or an early swim and continue with a visit to Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Museum or the nearby harbour. After a swim or a day on the beach, return to rinse away the sand and salt beneath the outdoor shower. However, you have spent the day, settle into the courtyard or balcony with a drink before preparing a leisurely supper in the welcoming kitchen. Later, enjoy board games, films and conversation in the sitting room as the light changes across the bay. As evening draws in, retreat to the sea-view bedroom and fall asleep to the waves—a fitting end to a day in one of St Ives’ most atmospheric coastal settings.
Explore St Ives and West Cornwall
St Ives offers plenty to enjoy without travelling far. Wander around the working harbour and cobbled lanes, browse independent shops and galleries, or discover the town’s celebrated artistic heritage at Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Beach days are equally varied: swim and relax on the golden sands, try surfing at Porthmeor, or follow the coast around Porthgwidden and the grassy headland known as The Island. Boat trips, sea safaris and scenic coastal walks offer further ways to experience St Ives Bay, while its cafés, pubs and restaurants make it easy to pause for fresh local food with a view.
Further afield, West Cornwall is made for memorable days out. Cross the tidal causeway or take a boat to St Michael’s Mount to explore its historic village and castle, visit the picturesque fishing harbour at Mousehole, or continue towards Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre, dramatically set into the cliffs above the Atlantic. The wild landscapes around Land’s End and the West Penwith peninsula reward walkers with rugged headlands, hidden coves and far-reaching sea views, while Penzance and Newlyn offer more galleries, independent shops, restaurants and a strong connection to Cornwall’s artistic and fishing heritage.
Whether your ideal day involves art and culture, swimming and surfing, a coastal walk or a leisurely drive between fishing villages, Watersedge Cottage is a convenient base for discovering the character and contrasts of St Ives and the wider West Cornwall coast.
