Half term coincides with Halloween and, as always, this October is packed full of fun family events. There’s plenty to choose from including spooktakular events at Lappa Valley near Newquay, Halloweden at the Eden Project, the Halloween Disco at Paradise Park and the Trick or Treasure events at Pirate’s Quest, to name just a few.
Alternatively, you could visit one of the most haunted places in Cornwall. Pendennis Castle, Bodmin Jail and Jamaica Inn are just some of the Cornish places with spooky tales and mysterious events surrounding them. Are you brave enough to find out why?
Depending on the dates of your child’s half term break, family holidays in Cornwall this half term may be perfectly timed with bonfire night celebrations. The Flambards Firework Spectacular is usually a bit earlier than bonfire night itself, and is one of the highlights of West Cornwall’s firework display calendar. The theme park has Halloween events happening during the week too. The Land’s End fireworks are another spectacular show in West Cornwall. Watch dazzling displays light up the night’s sky above the ocean.
Other local firework displays include Godrevy beach, Porthtowan beach, Heartlands near Redruth and the football ground in Penzance. You don’t have to travel too far from your St Ives cottage to see a wonderful display. There will be one above Carbis Bay beach and also the annual display on Porthminster beach in St Ives. You may be able to see them from your holiday cottage garden, or you can head down to the beach and get closer to the action. Details of display dates and times, plus other information about bonfires, entertainment, beach BBQ’s and refreshments will be confirmed closer to the time.
The weather in October can still be very mild and we may even be treated to a bit more sunshine. Even if it’s a bit chilly and drizzly, October is a great month for invigorating coastal walks, autumnal strolls in the woods and exploring cobbled streets and country lanes. But if it’s pouring with rain or just too cold to stay outside all day, a visit to one of Cornwall’s all weather attractions will keep all the family entertained.
Paradise Park is close to St Ives in the neighbouring seaside town of Hayle and offers plenty of fun for everyone. The park has exotic gardens to explore in between the rain showers, tropical birds, parrots and mammals to meet, a fun farm, jungle express train, indoor Jungle Barn play area and the Bird and Hand pub at the entrance of the park. Just 15 miles away in Helston you’ll find the Flambards Experience. Even if you’re not heading there for the Halloween activities or fireworks, there’s still an awful lot to explore. With more than 20 rides and attractions for all ages and the indoor Victorian Village and Britain in the Blitz attractions, there’s something for everyone.
Just over 30 miles away from St Ives there’s another fantastic family attraction called Dairyland Farmworld. Learn about the workings of a dairy farm and have lots of fun around the park. There’s the milking parlour, tractor house and nature trail as well as indoor and outdoor play areas for all ages, including adventure playgrounds, mini tractors, soft play and drop slides. Venture a bit further afield and a great day out awaits at the Eden Project.
